Clarissa Hulse

Bringing colour to commerce with a 148% sales uplift

Room to grow, without losing the colour

Clarissa Hulse designs botanical prints from a studio in North London, across wallpaper, fabric, bed linen, clothing and artwork. The work is vivid, layered and instantly recognisable.

We helped the brand move from WooCommerce to Shopify, creating an ecommerce experience that better reflects the character of the brand while making it easier for customers to explore and shop its collections. Behind the scenes, bespoke development and integrations have simplified fulfilment, opened up international opportunities and provided a platform for continued growth.

The Brief

Clarissa Hulse had built a successful interiors and lifestyle brand around its unmistakable use of colour, pattern and botanical illustration. But as the product range and customer base grew, its existing WooCommerce website was becoming increasingly difficult to manage.

The business needed a platform that could support international expansion, improve the customer experience and simplify an increasingly complicated operation.

With products ranging from cushions and bed linen to made-to-measure murals, customers needed different ways to explore, compare and purchase. The existing website wasn't making that process as intuitive as it could be.

Behind the scenes, fulfilment was another challenge. Orders were handled by multiple warehouse partners, with stock information, order details and despatch confirmations transferred manually between systems. As order volumes increased, so did the administrative workload.

Above all, there was the brand to consider. Clarissa Hulse's designs are the reason people shop with the business, so any improvements to usability and performance had to preserve the colour, energy and individuality that make its work so recognisable.

The Strategy

We recommended migrating to Shopify, providing Clarissa Hulse with a more flexible, reliable platform that could support the business as it continued to grow.

But this was about more than changing ecommerce platforms.

We wanted to create a shopping experience that reflected how customers discover and buy interiors. Unlike many everyday purchases, choosing wallpaper, fabric or bedding involves considering colour, scale and how different products might work together in a space.

That thinking informed our approach to the design, navigation and product discovery, giving customers more freedom to browse by colour, collection and product type, supported by inspirational content.

We also identified two areas where standard Shopify functionality wouldn't be enough: creating a more intuitive buying experience for made-to-measure murals, and connecting the website with Clarissa Hulse's existing fulfilment partners.

Both would require bespoke development to meet the needs of the business.

The Execution

We migrated Clarissa Hulse's product catalogue, customer data and order history from WooCommerce to Shopify, preserving existing URLs and protecting organic search visibility.

The new storefront was designed to celebrate the brand's distinctive use of colour and pattern, with large product imagery, intuitive navigation and collections organised around how customers shop for their homes. Colour filtering, lookbooks and decorating guides make it easier to explore the range and find inspiration. We also configured Shopify Markets to support international selling across 26 markets, with pricing displayed in local currencies.

A key part of the project was developing a bespoke tool for Clarissa Hulse's made-to-measure murals. Customers can choose from 43 designs, enter their wall dimensions and preview how the artwork will fit, with pricing calculated automatically. This turns a traditionally complex purchase into a straightforward online experience, without the need for manual enquiries.

Behind the scenes, we developed bespoke middleware to connect Shopify with two separate fulfilment partners. Using Shopify Locations, orders are automatically directed to the appropriate warehouse, with stock levels and despatch confirmations synchronised between systems. Scheduled data exchanges and monitoring help keep information accurate and identify any issues.

Together, these improvements have created a more engaging shopping experience while removing much of the manual administration involved in running the business. Clarissa Hulse now has a platform that supports its international ambitions, accommodates growing order volumes and, importantly, stays true to the character of the brand.

“
I have run my online retail business for 18 years and worked with six different developers in that time, with varying levels of frustration! I can honestly say Farrows have been a complete game changer for me. They have built a beautiful website that I’m really proud of, and maintained it effortlessly for the past two years — someone’s always on hand when we need help, without an annoying ticket system (a pet peeve!). We’ve since started using them for paid ads and Klaviyo support too, and that’s working really well. On top of all that, they’re genuinely lovely people to work with, which is everything!

The Results

The move to Shopify has provided Clarissa Hulse with a stronger foundation for growth, improving the customer experience while making the business easier to manage behind the scenes.

Commercial performance has been particularly encouraging. Between 2024 and 2025, sales increased by 148% year on year, with orders up 140% and new customer acquisition growing by 112%.

The new platform has made it easier for customers to discover and purchase products, including made-to-measure murals, while supporting the brand's expansion into international markets.

Operationally, the automated fulfilment integrations have removed much of the manual work involved in managing orders, stock and despatches. This has allowed Clarissa Hulse to handle significantly higher order volumes without a corresponding increase in administration.

Most importantly, the business now has an ecommerce platform that can support its continued growth without compromising the distinctive identity that makes Clarissa Hulse so recognisable.
